Changes of such significance took place in Poland during the Second World War and several following decades. Collective experience of that time was made up of — apart from political antagonisms — social and cultural phenomena such as change of elites, reinterpretation of their grand narratives or symbolic worldthe ultimate inclusion of the masses into the national project based on the post-gentry tradition and national history, the intensive development of urban lifestyle and the expansion of popular culture, industrialization and the process of forming a single-nationality state that diverted from the politics of domination over eastern neighbors and, instead, focused on developing the so-called Polish Western and Northern Lands.
Studium postaw polskich w XX wieku. It was this experience that induced him to undertake the challenge of attempting a new collective and national as well as individual self-identification, searching for a radically new way of thinking and writing about man, and verifying the essential components of his identity.
It must be stressed that the need for re-establishing the sense of identity, resulting from a major crisis, was by no means limited to the postwar artistic and political elites. By adopting the narrativist approach, identity can be described through its articulations in culture, for example in literary texts. When necessary, I refer also to his dramatic works and poetry, especially to some longer poems published after While focusing on this period, I also analyze later works published in collections Nasz starszy brat and Matka odchodzi published in the last decade of the 20th century, although written at an earlier date.
Conversations with the writer published in Wbrew sobie. I read his works in the context of identity narratives manifest in culture and historical-biographical stories. When and how does individual experience take on an intersubjective meaning?
"rodzinny" English translation
Under what circumstances is it expressed in the public sphere? Have new identification patterns emerged in the Polish modernity, and if so, then what fields and phenomena of the 20th century culture or history have taken on such model significance?
How and where were boundaries drawn be tween what is individual in an identity of a person speaking and thinking in Polish on the one hand, and, on the other, what is collective? Trying to answer these questions, I refer to categories of cultural anthropology such as symbolic universe, collective memory, autobiographical identity, body and space in culture, as well as to notions from the social sciences — interpersonal relationship, public discourse and communicative community.
I rely on their reconstruction of social-historical background of modern identity presented by these authors as well as on language used by them. The book structure results from the overlapping, or even conflict, of two research objectives.
I do not disregard his views voiced in non-fiction narratives and public speeches, yet I am mostly interested in experience, world view and self-comprehension of his literary persona and literary hero presented or partially derived from an idea of man and of community in his texts. I read his prose as an element of a public discourse and at the same time as an indirect — formulated in fictional, intimate or notebook narratives — criticism of social reality and European culture in the 20th century.

High Voltage Protection for Telecommunications.Culture Vulture, I chanced on your blog when I searched for Native Realm, which I read during jury duty, or waiting to be called questioned and dismissed. Really smart insights.
I'm at mylovingarms. I am sending this link to a friend who loves all things Russian and would, I thought, be interested in Milosz' chapter on same. Hence I searched the web for background to make myself sound smarter. One click and I found you. Now I AM smarter. Thanks for the comment!
It's sort of an anguished love-hate relationship, understandably. It's interesting that you recommend it on those grounds to someone who loves Russian stuff though. It's sort of neat. I wouldn't say love-hate. His insights are pretty solidly negative or at least questioning.
Interesting for those of us me far more aware of Russian than Polish lit. Yes Remnick is all about Russia. I'm not passing on more titles; my friend's Egyptian. I'm a poet so our connection is poetry. He's far more cosmopolitan and versed in world lit than most Americans. I'm suggesting Czeslaw who I saw read in a packed and properly adulatory auditorium because it's was I was reading. The Future Is Happy. My collection. That might seem minor, but it's a lot further than many Polish intellectuals might be willing to go.
But you see why it would seem odd to recommend to someone who loves Russian stuff - it's not exactly a glowing review. Even if you are, you may not know this anthology he put together of poetry from all over the world, A Book of Luminous Things. It's lovely, much recommended. Post a Comment. The title of the English translation, Native Realm: A Search for Self-Definition, is deceptive, for it implies that the quest of the book is the self understood in the American sense, and the quest a process of psychological probing.
But Milosz makes it very clear in the introduction that this is not his purpose. Rather, he wants to explain who he is as a representative of the part of Eastern Europe that he hails from, to write against the prevailing view of Eastern Europeans. As he writes, "Undoubtedly I would call Europe my home, but it was a home that refused to acknowledge itself as a whole; instead, as if on the strength of some self-imposed taboo, it classified its population into two categories: members of the family quarrelsome but respectable and poor relations" 2.
This is a problematic process in that he both claims his homeland as a part of Europe but also stakes out for it an exclusive position, an insistent difference.
And this insistent difference often takes the form of moral highground: "While the countries that bordered the Atlantic were acquiring colonies across the seas and setting up manufactures, no such foolhardy ventures interested the Eastern Europeans, who were engaged exclusively in agriculture; and their consciences today are not burdened with the sufferings of black slaves or the first proletarians".
Leaving aside the question of how justified such a view is, it's curious to me that Milosz both glorifies Poland as the site of a potential alternate vision of nation, crushed by its ruthless neighbors, but likewise indicts Poles, and particularly Polish nationalists, for their messianic visions of Poland.
As though his version of Eastern Europeans being sacrificed for the good of civilization is free from vainglorious delusions of the more typical formPlease choose whether or not you want other users to be able to see on your profile that this library is a favorite of yours.

In our Declaration of Independence, the founders claim the right to form our own government because it became "necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands" that tie them to another. Eagar Fire Chief Howard Carlson is interviewed by reporter Trisha Hendricks of Channel 12 News in Phoenix at the Arizona Wildfire Forum April 18. EAGAR State Forester Scott Hunt co-hosted the Arizona Wildfire Forum on April 18 in Eagar along with the Arizona State Forestry Division, the Arizona Insurance Council and the Arizona Forest Health Council.
Billed as lessons learned in 2011 and community protection going forward, the forum was attended by officials and representatives from the above organizations as well as local and county officials from Apache, Navajo, Greenlee, and Graham counties and those from Payson, Prescott, Tucson, Ponderosa near Flagstaff, and agents with Farmers Insurance. Hunt started the forum with information about the 2011 fire season and stated that Arizona is considered a wildfire state.
Over 9,000 structures were threatened last year with 111 destroyed. There were 19 red flag days last year, which is wind speeds of 20 to 25 miles per hour with gusts up to 60 miles per hour, low relative humidity and high fuel loads. Hunt went on to give those present the current predictions for the 2012 fire season, which has already started. The National Fire potential map shows the states most at risk with Arizona (the only state in the country that is mostly covered in red) are western New Mexico, Utah and Colorado, a large portion of Florida and up the east coast to North Carolina, as well as parts of California and Nevada.
More firefighters than civilians die in forest fires. The average number since 1990 to 2010 is about 10 civilians per year compared to 20 firefighters. The largest loss of firefighters in the last 20 years was about 36 in 1994. Hunt reported that the funds for the 2012-2013 fiscal year for fuel reduction treatments has been cut by about 20 percent.
Other documents at the forum show that there are a total of 46 million homes that are in the potential line of fire in what is called the wildland-urban interface (WUI).
The average number of structures lost in wildfires has increased rapidly since the 1990s. The years 2003, 2007 and 2011 had the most structures lost across the country at 5,781, 4,900, and 5,850 respectively. Along with the rise in fires and structures lost are the costs associated with fighting fires, in direct correlation. The rest of the forum was spent on Community Wildfire Protection Plans, funding for plans, WUI fire codes, the Firewise USA program, and the Ready, Set, Go program.
All of these programs are efforts started by federal, state and local governments and local private communities to educate property owners on their responsibilities to make sure their property is fire safe.
Most forest area fire departments and communities have one or more of the above programs and will help property owners assess their risks.
That includes, in some cases, funding to help with thinning treatments. Insurance companies are also working with clients. Log InKeep it Clean. Please avoid obscene, vulgar, lewd, racist or sexually-oriented language.
